Wakefield

National Coal Mining Museum

Situated at the crossroads of two motorways, the city of Wakefield and its surrounding district make the perfect location for a day visit, short break or longer holiday. Wakefield is also an ideal base for visiting the region as a whole.

Heritage, history, shopping and sport are all on offer within the Wakefield district itself. With cinemas, ten-pin bowling, theatres, nightclubs, country parks, leisure centres and an excellent selection of sporting fixtures, you really will be spoilt for choice. Don’t forget the infamous Rhubarb Festival, which includes tours of the rhubarb forcing sheds, gourmet dinners and cookery demonstrations.

A visit to the National Coal Mining Museum for England will allow you to travel 140 metres underground and experience the conditions endured by coal miners over the years. If going underground is not for you then a visit the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, set in the landscaped grounds of Bretton Hall, is a must. Enjoy the extensive outdoor display areas and pop into the indoor galleries and Bothy Café.

If retail therapy is what's needed, then take a visit to Ridings Shopping Centre - and if you're here at Christmas, don't miss the Victorian Christmas Festival.

Must see and do
