Pontefract

Liquorice festival

Pontefract’s annual Liquorice Festival is a celebration of the town’s long-standing association with the growing and manufacture of liquorice confectionery. The earliest record linking Pontefract and liquorice was in 1695, when it was probably used for medicinal purposes.

Liquorice is no longer grown here commercially but the famous Pontefract cakes are still produced in the town and can be bought direct from the two factory shops. The town is famous in horse racing circles for having the longest flat, circular course in Europe.
