Otley

Emmerdale cast members

Otley, just 10 miles north of Leeds, represents a transformation from a dynamic city to the beautiful and unspoilt countryside of Lower Wharfedale.

Fans of the popular, long-running rural TV series Emmerdale, will no doubt recognise much of the scenery: Otley is in fact Hotton, the market town featured in the programme.

Steeped in history, Otley has much to interest the visitor. The River Wharfe, running through the town, provides an ideal location for anglers, bird-watchers or for relaxing riverside walks. Wharfemeadows Park, beside the river, has attractive gardens, boating facilities, tennis courts, a cafĂ© and children's play areas.

The many buildings dating from Victorian, Georgian and even earlier times give the town its unique atmosphere. A market has been held here since Saxon times, and it is still famous for its market days, held on Fridays and Saturdays, plus Tuesdays in the summer. One of Otley's best known sons was Thomas Chippendale, the furniture maker. His family were joiners by trade and he served his apprenticeship in the town.

At the heart of rural Leeds, Otley makes an ideal day out, whether you want to explore the countryside or visit the attractive shops and tea-rooms.
