Colne Valley
The Colne Valley, connecting the villages of Golcar, Linthwaite, Slaithwaite and Marsden, is home to waterways, festivals and inspirational landscapes.
Lying to the west of Huddersfield, the Colne Valley has much to explore including the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and Standedge Tunnel the longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel in Britain. Wander along the canal and visit a number of interesting small villages. Golcar, set on the hillside overlooking the valley, has a fine collection of weavers' cottages and is home to the Colne Valley Museum. The museum has been developed within an 18th century weavers cottage which highlights the area’s rich textile heritage with demonstrations of traditional activities and crafts.
Slaithwaite is dominated by magnificent mill buildings, as well as a Georgian Church and the nearby 16th Century Slaithwaite Hall. The village also features in the television series 'Where the Heart Is', in which it is known as Skelthwaite!
The dramatic Peak District Park and the National Trust Marsden Moor Estate cover the high Pennine moor up over Marsden making the town an excellent base for walkers, cyclists and riders alike. The National Trust organise regular plant sales, guided walks and events throughout the year, offer something for everyone on the Moor.
From the Moonraking Festival to the springtime pagan festival of Imbolc and the Marsden Cuckoo Day, this is the place to come to celebrate. The local choirs and brass bands are recognised for their musical talent and the annual Marsden Jazz Festival in October is also popular. Local theatre groups such as the Mikron Theatre company provide another source of vivid entertainment in the valley.
