Hornsea
As well as having its own lovely seafront, with golden sands and an attractively refurbished promenade to stroll along, Hornsea also sits on the shore of Yorkshire’s largest freshwater lake. On Hornsea Mere, you can have a go at sailing, rowing, fishing – and it is also a haven for all kinds of birds.
Hornsea is a handsome town with a colourful history. Who would have thought it was once a centre for smuggling? Much of the area’s history is told at the award-winning Hornsea Folk Museum, set in a historic farmhouse.
Today shopping has taken over from smuggling as one of the town's favourite pastimes. People come from miles around to visit Wilbur’s Market on the seafront, known as one of the friendliest markets in Yorkshire, and the Hornsea Freeport Shopping Village. With more than 40 outlets, everything from big name fashion brands to kitchenware and china comes at irresistible prices.
