Marlborough

Marlborough Green

Marlborough lies in the valley of the River Kennet between the ancient Savernake Forest and the Marlborough Downs. Bordering the Downs to the north, the town straddles the A4 and for centuries was an important staging post on the great road from London to Bath and Bristol.

Each end of the high street is capped by a church; at the west end the 15th-century St Peter's, and to the east (behind the Town Hall) the Church of St Mary's. Other notable buildings in the high street include the splendid Merchant's House, built during the Cromwellian period, and now restored as a 17th-century town house. Marlborough's high street is reputedly one of the widest streets in Britain and Marlborough College is one of the finest public schools in the country.
