Devizes
Half an hour from Bath, Salisbury and Swindon, Devizes makes an ideal day out destination. The town's rich history makes it a treasure in the heart of Wiltshire.
Devizes Visitor Centre provides an excellent introduction to the town, housing an interactive exhibition, gift shop and tourism centre where staff will be able to point you to the many places of interest.
Dating back to the 11th century, Devizes is filled with history, from it's medieval street plan and Norman churches to Georgian architecture and the Kennet and Avon canal.
The canal cuts through the town and no visit would be complete without seeing the Caen Hill lock flight, a staircase of 29 locks and a marvel of engineering. More on the heritage of the canal can be found at the Canal Museum.
Devizes is also home to the Wiltshire Heritage Museum, a "designated" museum with a highly respected collection spread over 8 galleries. These include a medieval gallery and prehistoric collections with some of the most important objects associated with Stonehenge and Avebury.
Added to this are many fine pubs, eating places and specialist shops tucked away in courtyards and old alleyways and a bustling Thursday market.
