Frome
Frome is the most easterly and largest of the Mendip towns. It has had a long history as a market and agricultural town with, for many centuries, a flourishing cloth industry.
Today, Frome is an attractive place with many historic buildings, some located in steep, winding streets reminiscent of a bygone era.
Specialist shops catering for all requirements are a feature of the town, particularly in the Cheap Street and Catherine Hill areas.
Frome is a thriving local centre for the arts and culture, exemplified by the Black Swan arts and crafts exhibition centre, the Merlin Theatre, and the Frome Festival, a ten-day celebration of all things cultural, held annually in July.
Visitors are encouraged to follow a Heritage Walking Trail around the town centre, available from the local Tourist Information Centre, to find out more about this fascinating town. Features of interest include the parish church, the bridge (a contemporary of Bath’s Pulteney Bridge), and Frome Museum, which interprets the town’s social and industrial history. ‘Farmers’ Markets’ are held on the second Saturday of each month in the popular Cheese & Grain Hall. The world-famous city of Bath and Longleat Safari Park are among the many attractions nearby.
