Princetown
A small town, which is located at the highest point on Dartmoor of 1,300ft. Dartmoor Prison has dominated Princetown since 1805, when prisoners from the American War of Independence and Napoleonic Wars were first jailed.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle began writing The Hound of the Baskervilles at The Duchy Hotel (now the High Moorland Visitors Centre).
Whilst you are in the town you can follow the Tyrwhitt Trail named after the founder of the town, Thomas Tyrwhitt. There are also walks to nearby North and South Hessary Tors and along the old railway line to King’s Tor, Swelltor and Foggintor Quarries. To the East of Hessary Tor you can find Childe’s Tomb, the legendary grave of a lost hunter.
