Okehampton
Set in the very heartland of Devon and nestling in the foothills of northern Dartmoor, Okehampton is an historic market town that has something for everyone. Browse small independent shops which offer friendly service and unusual goods. Enjoy an original Victorian shopping arcade and surrounding Georgian architecture. Sample traditional pubs offering real ales and home cooked food.
Visit Simmons Park and enjoy greenery and tranquillity right in the heart of the town. This lovely park offers mature parkland complete with its centrepiece the East Ockment river that runs off the slopes of Dartmoor.
A mile or so out of town is Okehampton Castle, mentioned in the Doomsday Book and now maged by English Heritage. Enjoy the history and legends of the castle ruins which dramatically stand surrounded by natural woodlands.
You can also discover Okehampton’s rich past at the Museum of Dartmoor Life located in the centre of the town. The Museum has recently enjoyed extensive refurbishment and houses 3 floors of exhibits and regualry hosts and array of events.
To appreciate Okehampton’s moorland location, a trip on the Dartmoor Railway is highly recommended. Journeys start at Okehampton’s lovingly restored Rail Station and travel either to the impressive Meldon viaduct or the pretty village of Sampford Courtenay.
