Redruth

Redruth

A bustling town offering full amenities, central for touring West Cornwall with good road and rail links. In the heart of what was once the most intensively mined area in the world, relics of the area’s rich industrial past are all around.   The ivy covered engine houses with their tall chimneys still preside over the landscape and serve as a reminder of times past.

Redruth celebrates its proud heritage in a blaze of colour in June of each year with Murdoch weekend to commemorate William Murdoch the inventor of domestic gas lighting, who lived here in the late 18th century.

Looming high above Redruth and the neighbouring town of Camborne, is the spectacular granite tor of Carn Brea, crowned by its stark memorial to mine owner Francis Basset and offering panoramic views across to the north cliffs, Portreath and St Ives Bay.

The Great Flat Lode Trail (part of the Mineral Tramways) runs through the historic landscape around Carn Brea.   And slightly further afield at Portreath why not join the other Mineral Tramways Trail, the Coast-to-Coast Trail, which takes you from the historic harbour of Portreath on the north coast across country to Devoran on the south coast.
