River Thames, Surrey
Runnymede takes its name from the meadow where the Magna Carta was sealed in 1215. It borders Windsor, Maidenhead and Elmbridge and runs along the bank of the Thames opposite Spelthorne.
While exploring the river and the National Trail, you can ramble in the countryside and waterways in Runnymede, Spelthorne and Elmbridge. The Magna Carta, RAF and JF Kennedy memorials are within walking distance of the river at Runnymede and there are cafés on Runnymede itself, or along the Windsor Road at Runnymede Pleasure Grounds. The attractive Riverside Park at Staines is a pleasant place to stop and opens out into excellent shopping in the refurbished town centre. Shepperton square offers an attractive river frontage as do a number of parks.
Boat trips pass between Windsor and Hampton Court, stopping along the way.
There are places to eat in Staines, Chertsey, Egham, Addlestone, Virginia Water, Weybridge, Walton and Shepperton, all of which can be accessed by train, as well as car.
Family attractions including Thorpe Park, Savill Gardens and Virginia Water, the Wentworth Club, Kempton Park and Sandown Park are within the area.
