Kent Thameside
Kent Thameside is at the heart of the Thames Gateway and covers the Boroughs of Dartford and Gravesham. The area is going to see large scale development over the next decades but is keen to retain its cultural heritage and sense of place.
With a wide range of landscapes, both boroughs are part of the Garden of England. As old Roman settlements, they are also rich in history.
Dartford is an old market town with a rich industrial heritage. Paper making and cement production were major industries in the area for centuries, and many technological advances in production were made by local companies. Dartford is also proud of its notable and built heritage. To the south of the town lie a number of beautiful and ancient parishes, all linked with English history.
Situated on the south bank of the River Thames and 20 miles from London, Gravesham’s heritage is strongly linked with the river and historical buildings surrounding the area. Roman legacy also remains in the form of the Springhead Roman site near Northfleet, and the important Roman Road, Watling Street. With nearly 25 000 acres, much of the rural part of the Borough is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
