Seaford
Once a member of the Cinque Ports, Seaford was home to shipwrights, chandlers, sailors, fishermen and merchants, and was a prosperous town with its large lagoon-like harbour.
In 1579, Seaford’s neighbouring town awoke from a storm to discover that the River Ouse had burst through a shingle bar, creating a new estuary and natural harbour in their town - a new haven – and had, simultaneously, destroyed Seaford’s own natural harbour.
Today, Seaford has a beautiful and envied pebbled beach and, although the landscape has changed dramatically, its history and maritime connections are both obvious and integral to the identity of the town and its inhabitants.
There are local history collections based in the Martello Tower museum and a heritage trail to take visitors on a journey through the town. The Crypt Art Gallery in Seaford contains a 13th Century merchant’s undercroft, enveloped by a contemporary art gallery.
Seaford has a bustling town centre with a thriving leisure centre. Many outdoor activities are available in and around the town, including the Seaford Head golf course, situated on the top of one of the Seven Sisters cliffs.
