Newhaven

Crypt Gallery

In 1579 the town known as 'Meeching' woke to discover that the river Ouse had burst through a shingle bar, creating a new natural harbour - a new haven.

Steeped in maritime history, today Newhaven is a thriving and creative place to visit. With its cross channel ferry service, busy port and marina, Newhaven will appeal to anyone with a nautical flair.

West Quay provides an ideal location to observe the fishing fleet and fresh fish is sold daily. Whether it is yachting, scuba diving or any number of water activities that appeal, it can be found in Newhaven.

The unforgettable Dieppe Raid was launched from Newhaven Port and close links with Normandy and Canada are maintained with annual memorial trips to remember the allied forces and those who fought during WW2.

Threat of invasion also led to the building of a string of coastal defences around the UK and Newhaven Fort is a fine example, commanding superb cliff top views. Newhaven Fort is now open to the public as a family attraction offering a fascinating day out.

Nearby attractions include the beautiful Paradise Park botanical gardens & Dinosaur Trail, Seaford’s Martello Tower and the Seven Sisters Country Park.
