South Shields
South Shields is a traditional seaside resort with beautiful beaches and a dramatic coastline. Badly damaged by bombing during World War II, the town has undergone much replanning and rebuilding and is now a vibrant riverside town. Care has been taken to preserve the interesting relics of the past such as the Old Town Hall, built in 1768 in the market place. South of the centre is Westoe, an attractive village of Georgian and Victorian houses. It was the birthplace of Sir William Fox, who was the prime minister for New Zealand three times.
