Jarrow
Jarrow is a town steeped in history. In the 7th century it was the centre of religious learning in the country, and a century ago it was famous as a great shipbuilding town. The Tyne’s traditional industries have long vanished and today Jarrow and neighbouring Hebburn are busy riverside towns. St Paul’s Monastery was founded in Anglo-Saxon times, and it was here that the Venerable Bede spent his life teaching and writing over 1,300 years ago. Jarrow Hall now houses the Bede Monastery Museum. In the 1930s the area came under the spotlight due to the Jarrow Crusade. To draw attention to the region’s unemployment and distress a group of men marched from the town to London.
