Saltburn-By-The-Sea

Saltburn, a relaxed and refined resort

Saltburn is still a relaxed and refined resort, with a charm and character that’s distinctly Victorian. The gaiety and flamboyance of the town’s heritage is everywhere! The formal Italian Gardens are linked to the shore by a miniature railway and a unique cliff lift, which opened in 1884; it is Britain’s oldest operating water-balance cliff lift. The lift affords panoramic views during its gentle descent to this coast’s only pier. The pier was originally a magnificent 1,400 ft long, but it had its length reduced to a more modest 600 ft by freak tides in 1974. Saltburn’s coast is recognised as part of the Heritage Coastline and is crowned by dramatic headlands. Rich in fossils, the sheer rock faces boast some of the finest formations in Britain, whilst providing shelter for native and migrant birds. In times gone past, the rock’s hidden folds also concealed smuggled contraband, landed here by the expert seamen whose skills made them popular targets of the ‘pressgang’. For over the past four years Saltburn has gained national recognition in ‘Britain in Bloom’.
