Stocksfield

Stocksfield

Stocksfield is a leafy suburban village, which has developed thanks to the arrival of the railway in the 1830s. The village has no definite focal point, but rather extends itself over a picturesque range of wood and valley scenery. Historically, the most important township was Bywell, which still provides Stocksfield’s parish church. Only the most important buildings survive here now, but these are significant: a castle, two churches, St Peter's and St Andrew's – both of some antiquity – and Bywell Hall, the home of Lord Allendale, which was built in 1766.
