Haydon Bridge

Haydon Bridge

Haydon Bridge straddles the South Tyne seven miles west of Hexham. As its name suggests, the village owes its existence to its river crossing; even today it is the only settlement that truly occupies both banks of the river. The earlier village of Haydon stood high on a hill. Today the only remnant is Haydon Old Church, which offers fine panoramas over the present village and the valley. Haydon Bridge today is a quiet village, best enjoyed as a base for touring and walking. Its most famous son is John Martin, the Victorian artist, whose birthplace is a short walk from the village centre. This walk can easily be extended to take in nearby Langley Castle, a former ruin restored in the late 19th century and recently imaginatively converted into a hotel.
