Haltwhistle

Centre of Britain sign in Haltwhistle

Haltwhistle is a traditional market town in the beautiful South Tyne Valley, lying between, and very close to, the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site, to say nothing of the Northumberland National Park. Because of these beautiful and interesting surroundings, Haltwhistle is a popular base for walkers or for those who wish to explore the area's Roman heritage. The town is within easy reach of some of the best sites on Hadrian's Wall, and offers a bus connection to the Wall all year round. Visitors could be forgiven for thinking that the town's name is taken from its situation on the Tyne Valley railway line; however, staff in the Tourist Information Centre in the old station buildings will be quick to confirm that this is not the case – the name in fact goes back to Saxon times. First licensed in the 13th century, Haltwhistle's market takes place every Thursday in the quaint market place overlooking the town's early English church and traditional blacksmith's shop. Like its near neighbour, Allendale, Haltwhistle lays claim to being the geographical centre of Britain.
