Corbridge

Corbridge Parish Church

Corbridge is a charming residential village, once a market town, situated four miles east of Hexham and on all major routes to Newcastle. A Tyne crossing place since Roman days, the present bridge has stood since 1674 and was the only one on the river to survive the great flood of 1771. In Roman times Corbridge was the main town in the area, situated at the crossing point of two important roads. It acted as a garrison town for the central sector of Hadrian's wall, and extensive remains can still be seen at Corbridge Roman Site. St Andrew’s Church is part Saxon with two towers – one of them the Vicar's Pele – adjoining the church. With a population of 3,500, Corbridge is noted for its specialist shops and its quaint village atmosphere. Early closing Thursday.
