Wolsingham

View of Wolsingham from Redgate Bank

Originally a Saxon settlement and looked upon as the gateway to Weardale, this former market town serving lower Weardale is of great historic interest and offers many scenic walks, being well placed for exploring the fells and dales. The annual Wolsingham agricultural show, held every September, is reputedly the oldest in the country. The moors abound in old lead-workings and quarries; on Waskerley Beck, Tunstall Reservoir is the haunt of birdwatchers.
