Stanhope
An attractive market town, with a cobbled market place and a 12th-century Norman church (look for the fossilised tree in the graveyard). The Durham Dales Centre, located in the town centre, hosts a café, craft shops and the Tourist Information Centre. Details of the extensive walks in the area can be obtained there. In the market square opposite the church is a mock medieval castle and close to the town is a cave where important Bronze Age finds were made.
