Spennymoor

Booming coal and iron town from the 18th century until early in the present century when traditional industry gave way to lighter manufacturing and trading estates were built. On the moors south of the town there are fine views of the Wear Valley. Nearby Whitworth Hall was associated with Bonnie Bobbie Shafto, a County Durham MP immortalised in the famous ballad.
