Ireshopeburn

High House Chapel at Ireshopeburn

John Wesley preached in the small village of Ireshopeburn in 1752, and a plaque marks the site, outside the High House Chapel. The former minister’s house is now the Weardale Museum, where you can discover what life in the dale was like in the 19th century. As well as the strong Wesleyan connection, the museum has displays depicting the life and times of Weardale families in the Victorian era, the Weardale railway and its geology. The adjoining High House Chapel was built in 1760 and is the oldest purpose-built Methodist chapel still holding weekly services. Parking in Ireshopeburn is nearby and opening hours change with the season.
