Gainford

Situated on the A67 between Barnard Castle and Darlington, Gainford is a historic village, traceable back to AD801. It boasts elegant Georgian houses built around a wide village green near a fine Jacobean hall, a 13th-century church built over a Saxon monastery, the recently restored Gainford Spa on the River Tees and an ancient ford, which was originally a Roman river crossing. Stan Laurel once studied here at the Gainford Academy.
