Eggleston
Eggleston is a small village set between Barnard Castle and Middleton-in-Teesdale on the edge of the moors. It was once a smelting centre for the North Pennines lead industry, but no trace of this remains today. With many of its houses dating back to the early 18th century, Eggleston has links back to prehistoric times, with the remains of standing stones at Foggerthwaite just above the village. Nearby Eggleston Hall has extensive and glorious gardens that are open to the public. The Teesdale Way passes through the village and the pub makes a welcome refreshment stop.
