Crook

Devil's stone, Crook

A bustling market town with a pleasant, open market place, Crook is also the administrative centre of the Wear Valley District, and the Civic Centre is prominently situated in the town square. Large areas of lawns and flowerbeds on the market place green provide an attractive and colourful backdrop to the Parish Church of St Catherine's, which was built between 1840 and 1843, and was designed by Bonomi. Nearby, St Cuthbert's Roman Catholic Church (1854) is built in Gothic style, of local stone laid in courses with Painswick stone dressings. For the more active visitor, Glenhome Leisure Centre stands on the road to Bishop Auckland and contains a swimming pool, sauna, sunbed and squash facilities, together with bowling, putting and tennis areas. The Peases West Railway Walk is an interactive walk for all the family, which starts on the outskirts of Crook, just below Peases West Athletics ground on the B6298. Enjoy a meal at one of the many pubs, restaurants or coffee shops in the area, or try a round of 18-hole golf at Crook Golf Club.
