Originally the site of a Roman fort, Saxon bishopric is six miles north of Durham City, where the Burn flows into the river Wear. St. Cuthbert's coffin was here for 113 years after the Lindisfarne monks fled with it from the Danes. It later found a permanent shrine at Durham. Market days on Tuesday and Friday.
