West Derby

West Derby is actually older than Liverpool itself, and was a Viking village which translated as ‘Deer Village’. The most impressive feature of West Derby is the local church, which was built in 1853 by Sir George Gilbert Scott at the cost of £12,000. Also of interest are the nearby monument, cottages, the court house, fountain and Gate House. The monument was built around the same time as the church. Standing at around 3 meters tall, it features a statue of Jesus surrounded by angels reading the Bible. The court house was built in 1586, at which time no women were allowed in, and was used to give out fines and to send people to the stocks. The church backs onto Croxteth Park.
