Newton-le-Willows
This area of St Helens has a long and rich history. During excavations at Castle Hill in 1843, articles discovered dated back to 55BC and showed that the hill was built by the Celts as a burial mound. The expansion of Newton really began after the construction of the Liverpool to Manchester railway in 1830 which brought new industries to the town. Tourist highlights include 17th-century cottages, Elizabethan farmhouses and the Stanley Bank Meadow nature reserve, a seven mile park running from Carr Mill Dam to Newton-le-Willows.
