Stalybridge
The town of Stalybridge literally means ‘the place where wood staves are got’ from the Old English - the ‘Bridge’ affix came much later, indicating the town as a major crossing over the River Tame. Stalybridge was a leading town in the Industrial Revolution during the 19th century. Formerly a cotton mill village, it later transformed into a market town with people moving closer to Manchester. Currently in the middle of a major refurbishment with the canal being restored to its former glory. Numerous new cafés, shops and restaurants have opened.
