Oldham
Large important textile town boosted in 19th century by Arkwright’s spinning frame and Watt’s steam engine. Outstanding watercolours and exhibitions at the new RIBA award-winning Oldham Gallery. Also boasts an impressive neo-classical town hall, traditional ‘Tommyfield’ market and indoor shopping centres. The magnificent mill buildings, which made Oldham one of the world’s leading cotton-spinning towns, still dominate the landscape. Ideally situated on the edge of the Peak District, it is now a centre of culture, sport and shopping.
