Ashton-Under-Lyne

Ashton-Under-Lyne Market

Now part of the borough of Tameside, this old market town lies on the north bank of the River Tame. The Assheton family, who owned the manor of Ashton from the 14th century, are portrayed in the stained glass widows of St Michael’s Church. Ashton-Under-Lyne is the largest town in the borough, with excellent access to central Manchester and to the foothills of the Pennines. Famous for its 700 year old market and the confluence of 3 canals at Portland Basin. The Church of St Michael and All Angels is well worth a visit with its spectacular window. Ashton-under-Lyne is approximately 181 miles (297km) from London and has a population of 44,725.
