South Ribble

Samlesbury Hall

South of the River Ribble, the area offers arts, history and nature, in a delightfully open landscape.

Worden Park is set in over 150 acres (60 hectares) with formal gardens, a miniature railway and eighteenth century domed icehouse. Worden Crafts Centre houses 10 workshops where visitors can see local craftspeople at work and a coffee shop to relax in afterwards. The Arts Centre contains a fully equipped theatre, featuring unique work by the resident craftspeople, providing a stylish venue for plays.

The British Commercial Vehicle Museum, the largest of its kind in Europe, is devoted to the history of British Commercial Vehicles with over 60 restored exhibits on display. There are a variety of stalls for you to browse around both indoors and outdoor at Leyland market and a café on site.

For the outdoor enthusiast, South Ribble offers a good network of footpaths and a cycle network including off-road routes along the Old Tramway and at the side of the River Ribble. Longton Brickcroft Nature Reserve and Visitor Centre, a 27-acre wetland site, is the ideal starting point for walks through the countryside and along the marshes to the west.

Antiques and collectors items can be found at Samlesbury Hall, an impressive black and white timbered building with a beautiful rare oriel window. This ancient manor house, once the home of the Southworth family, is set in attractive gardens, home to the “Bowmen of Samlesbury”.
