Hyndburn
Where will you find the largest collection of Tiffany Glass in Europe? At Haworth Art Gallery in Accrington. The collection was a gift from Joseph Briggs who, having been born and brought up in Accrington, emigrated to New York to work for Louis Comfort Tiffany in 1890 at the age of 17 and remained with him for the rest of his life. Briggs presented over 120 pieces, including vases, tiles and mosaics to the town three years before his death in 1933, and it is now one of the most prized collections in the world.
Accrington is probably best known for its football team, Accrington Stanley, and for the famous 1st World War "Accrington Pals" Regiment. Much of the town is now a Conservation Area, with attractive Victorian stone buildings, a wonderful market in Lancashire's oldest market hall, and traditional specialist shops in the Abbey Grange shopping area.
Indeed, Hyndburn is a shopper's paradise! Visit Oswaldtwistle Mills, Stockleys Sweets Visitor Centre and many other mill shops. Outside the town are beautiful countryside walks, cruises along the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, and a choice of five golf courses among other excellent sporting facilities.
And when you're ready to relax in the evening, the district has a whole host of excellent pubs, restaurants, clubs, theatre and concert halls to choose from.
