Forest Of Bowland
The Forest of Bowland is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This protected landscape is a very special place where its stunning scenery and diverse natural habitats offer a real feeling of remoteness and tranquillity. The area remains unspoilt and even the well-trodden network of paths that criss-cross it remain an unobtrusive part of the ever changing habitats for many of Britain’s rare species of birds and wildlife. Even at the height of the season you can wander along through the countryside and farmland without meeting a soul.
The landscape has long been shaped by its people, the rich heather moorland has been traditionally managed for grouse shooting for generations and a dependency on sheep farming has also shaped the area. The Forest of Bowland also has a gentler side to its dramatic hillscapes with the rich green lowland pastures in the valleys of the rivers Wyre, Hodder, Ribble & Lune, and small, friendly villages.
The area offers a variety of indoor and outdoor pursuits from walking, cycling, horseriding, gliding and climbing through to picnicking, shopping and taking afternoon tea. There is a tremendous network of public footpaths and bridleways, cycleways and public transport links ensuring that everyone can access this area just waiting to be explored. Renowned for its warm local welcome; good food and places to stay, ensures the visitor a full ‘Bowland’ experience.
