The Lake District Peninsulas

Coniston and the Lake District Peninsulas

Surrounded by the sea, rolling countryside inland, a maritime history and rich religious heritage, the Lake District Peninsulas offer a rewarding combination.

From the Victorian town of Barrow-in-Furness to the cobbled streets and alleyways of Ulverston, the Furness Peninsula is full of surprises. Explore Furness Abbey, see glassware being handcrafted at the Lakes Glass Centre, learn about the region's maritime history at The Dock Museum or feed the animals at the South Lakes Wild Animal Park.

Nestling in the foothills is the unspoilt Lakeland town of Broughton-in-Furness, with its traditional market square, and the nearby Duddon Valley provides an idyllic setting for a lazy day on the banks of its crystal clear river.

The Cartmel Peninsula is equally diverse. Centred around a beautiful priory church is the picturesque village of Cartmel. With the sun shining, a picnic hamper bursting with delicious local fare and a spot of good luck, a day at Cartmel Races takes some beating! The nearby Edwardian seaside resort of Grange-over-Sands, known as "Lakeland's Riviera", has an impressive choice of cafés and tearooms.

Head inland and you will find Coniston, a peaceful lake which, on a still day, mirrors the famous Lakeland fells that surround it.
