Solway Coast

Solway

The Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has a host of coastal habitats supporting an impressive range of plants and animals, in particular huge numbers of wild fowl. The habitats range from raised beach to dunes, mud flats, salt marsh and peat moss. The newly opened Solway Coast Discovery Centre in Silloth explains, in an informative and entertaining way, how this unique area developed into what it is today. Check also at the centre for details of walks with local experts.

The coastal area is on the Irish Sea board with great views across to the Scottish coast. The panoramas are memorable and ever-changing with the time and seasons, but try and see one of the spectacular sunsets for which the Solway is rightly famous. Travel is easy as the area is flat: take a ride along one of the many cycle routes.   Families are well catered for too, with a number of caravan parks on the coast that make excellent holiday bases.
