Dent
The charming village of Dent is set in the beautiful and secluded valley of Dentdale. It retains a feel of the past with its hilly cobbled main street and colour-washed cottages. A place to relax and enjoy homemade afternoon tea – or for something a bit stronger try a pint of Dent Bitter, brewed and sold locally. Dent station, a little way up the valley, is the highest mainline station in England and is on the spectacular Settle to Carlisle Railway line.
Dent is popular with ramblers as it offers some of the best walks in the Dales. The Dales Way long distance footpath follows the sides of the River Dee for much of its length. In summer the meadows are a mass of wild flowers and in the hedgerows the rare Bellflower blooms in profusion. In winter the high ridge walks offer sweeping views to the sea and the snow-capped fells of the Lake District, 25 miles to the west. The Cumbria cycleway also passes up the valley, taking advantage of quiet back lanes free from motor vehicles.
