Macclesfield

Gawsworth Hall

Macclesfield became the centre of Britain's silk industry during the Industrial Revolution. There are many attractive Georgian mills, houses, inns, churches and chapels. Cobbled streets and quaint old buildings stand side-by-side with modern shops and three markets.

The town is the western gateway to the Peak District, with many beautiful walks on its doorstep and stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Nearby Teggs Nose and Macclesfield Forest offer a break from the town.

Macclesfield Silk Museum charts the history of Macclesfield’s silk history. Here you can explore the wonders of a working silk mill as it was in the 1930s, discover how they made silk buttons in the 1600s and try your hand at weaving, designing and printing.
