Sudbury
Set in the heart of the Stour Valley, an area designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Sudbury is a bustling market town and birthplace of artist Thomas Gainsborough. Gainsborough’s house contains a valuable collection of the artist’s work and some of his family possessions as well as a modern art gallery, print workshop and coffee shop.
The town lies on the River Stour and boat trips can be enjoyed during the summer months, run by the River Stour Trust and leaving from The Granary in Quay Lane. You can also enjoy a cream tea or home made cakes in their tea room.
The Quay Theatre, also in Quay Lane offers a varied programme in the lovely restored maltings, which has bags of atmosphere and caters for all ages and tastes.
There are plenty of other leisure activities to keep you busy including swimming in the Kingfisher Leisure Centre, walking along the Railway Walk from Sudbury to Long Melford and Lavenham and cycling the Cycle South Suffolk route.
The tourist information centre in the town hall (Gaol Lane) is full of information on the town and surrounding area.
