Orford

Orford

Orford is a beautiful village on the river with a small quay and a magnificient castle, the finest Norman keep in Britain. Built by Henry II for coastal defence between 1165 and 1173, it enjoys wonderful views of the surrounding countryside and sea as you climb the 200 stone steps to the top.

The Castle is owned by English Heritage and they occasionally have events and re-enactments during the year.

The parish Church of St Bartholomew, parts of which date from Norman times, is noted for its massive tower. The village has some interesting shops and a smokery selling fine foods. There are several eating establishments as well as good accommodation in the village. The Dunwich Underwater Exploration Exhibition is an interesting visit showing what has been found off the coast at Dunwich.

Down at the quay there are boat trips to Orfordness, a shingle spit off the coast, which has become a national nature reserve and the "Pagodas" are an eerie site off the coast. Guided tours are available.

The Lady Florence ship offers both brunch and dinner cruises throughout the year.
