Long Melford

Long Melford Church

The heart of Long Melford is set along a broad and pretty street, over a mile long. It is a place for walking and exploring the many antiques shops and warehouses, admiring the varying styles of architecture and stopping off for some refreshment in one of the many tea shops, pubs and restaurants.

Kentwell Hall, on the outskirts of the village, is an impressive red brick Tudor mansion. It was Heritage Building of the year in 2001 and still retains the original kitchen, bakehouse and brewhouse form the 15th century. Re-creations of Tudor life and World War II take place on selected weekends each year and there is also a rare breeds farm with working heavy horses.

Melford Hall, owned by the National Trust, is a turreted brick Tudor mansion with a dedicated Beatrix Potter room and display of some of her work. The writer was related to the Hyde-Parker family and was a frequent visitor to the house.

Long Melford is a busy village and hosts lots of events, including regular antiques fairs, books fairs and some major events in the grounds of Melford Hall such as The Big Night Out (fireworks display and fun fair) in November to celebrate Bonfire Night.
