Witham

Witham, Essex

Standing on the River Brain, the manor of Witham was given to the Knights Templar in 1148. It has been a cloth-making centre, spa and coaching town. Newland Street has many fine Georgian buildings, including the council offices and its period gardens. There is a statue of crime writer Dorothy L. Sayers, who lived in the town for 27 years from 1929.
