Basildon

Until the railway arrived in the 19th century Basildon was a small rural village, whose cottages clustered around the 14th century Holy Cross Church. In 1949 it became a New Town, and now has a population of around 160,000. The Eastgate Centre is a major shopping centres. Market days are Monday (second-hand goods), Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
