MICHAEL EAVIS SCOOPS TOURISM AWARD-Enjoy England Awards For Excellence Celebrated On St George’s Day

EMBARGOED UNTIL 22.00 ON 23 APRIL 2008

Glastonbury Festival organiser, Michael Eavis CBE, scooped the award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Tourism’ at this year’s Enjoy England Awards for Excellence 2008. The dairy farmer and committed environmentalist received the prestigious tourism award for hosting the legendary music festival at Worthy Farm in Somerset since the 1970s.

The award was given for the lead role Michael has taken in developing Glastonbury Festival as the showcase event of the summer music festival scene. The rise in popularity of outdoor music festivals demonstrates the contemporary appeal of England as well as capturing the imagination of younger visitors. Research carried out by Enjoy England indicates that 23 million (38%) of domestic visitors take in a festival or concert while they are on holiday. Last year, around 180,000 watched acts like the Arctic Monkeys, Amy Winehouse and Kaiser Chiefs over five days, with millions more around the world watching from live broadcasts by the BBC, who have televised the event since 1997.

A delighted Michael Eavis said: “I am honoured to receive this award. It’s wonderful to know that the Glastonbury Festival has played a large part in developing local tourism and has also inspired the growing English festival culture, attracting millions of holidaymakers every year.”

Organised by VisitBritain and sponsored by The Caravan Club, the awards were held in St Georges Hall, Liverpool, in celebration of St George’s Day and Liverpool’s status as European Capital for Culture. Previous winners of the outstanding contribution award include The Beatles, The Queen and the Harry Potter books and films.

Hugh Taylor chairman of VisitEngland said: “Not only has Michael Eavis created one of the world’s greatest music events but he is also undoubtedly the ‘godfather’ of all English music festivals. With around 180,000 taking part every year and a huge annual turnover, the Glastonbury Festival has put Somerset on the world map and made a substantial contribution to charity and the local economy. The festival’s unique spirit, which is also an important part of the local cultural scene, is mainly down to him and Michael Eavis remains one of the best-loved music promoters in the world."

The tourism awards recognise the best places to stay and visit in England. This year’s winners include a sixteenth century restaurant with rooms in Devon, Europe’s largest free airshow in Sunderland, an environmentally sustainable villa and restaurant in Norfolk and a children’s attraction and story centre in Buckinghamshire.

Finally, the winner of the consumer voted Travelmail award for The Best Day Out, is Whitby, North Yorkshire.  Launched this year, this category attracted thousands of votes from Travelmail readers who voted in their droves for Whitby - We love Whitby - a walk on the beach (whatever the weather) across to Sandsend - maybe with a game of beach cricket and a donkey ride for the kids, not to mention a quick paddle in the sea; a climb up the steps to the Abbey, browsing in the shops as we go. Lunch is fish and chips, the freshest you'll get anywhere. There's always room for an ice cream of course, and if we're feeling lively, then a walk on the moors on the way home is in order (or a trip on the north Yorks moors railway is fun!)
