ENGLAND SEES GROWTH IN TOP-QUALITY ACCOMMODATION

28-30 November 2007

England’s visitor accommodation is going up-market with more four- and five-star properties accepted into VisitBritain’s National Quality Assessment Standards, while the number of two- and three-star accommodation lessens.

England’s visitor accommodation is going up-market with more four- and five-star properties accepted into VisitBritain’s National Quality Assessment Standards, while the number of two- and three-star accommodation lessens.

In the six months since April 2007, the number of England’s 5-star hotels assessed by VisitBritain has risen by 3% and there are now 10% more four-star properties. Together four- and five-star guest accommodation has risen by 8%, while there are now over 12,300 four or five-star self-catering units – up 2%.

However, it is not an indication that England is getting more expensive. According to the national tourism agency’s ‘Great Places to Stay’ guide, per person per night, prices can start from as little as £25 – £55.

Tom Wright, chief executive of VisitBritain, says: “Our visitors are ever-more demanding and expect even greater quality from the places they stay and we are seeing this reflected in the growth of four- and five-star properties. However, it’s worth pointing out that 3-star properties still make up the majority of quality hotels and nearly half of guest accommodation and there are thousands of three- and lower-star properties across our schemes.

“Ultimately England offers something for every taste and budget and each one has been checked out by our experienced assessors, before its guests check in.”
