The nation yesterday voted Wastwater in the Lake District, Cumbria as Britain’s Favourite View.
The nation yesterday voted Wastwater in the Lake District, Cumbria as Britain’s Favourite View. Following a heated live final on ITV1 last night, Wastwater, championed by Coronation Street star Sally Whittaker, beat stiff competition from the three other finalists: Katherine Jenkins and Three Cliffs Bay on the Gower; Janet Street Porter with Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland and Eddie Irvine’s Mountains of Mourne in Northern Ireland.
Picking up the accolade for Wastwater, Sally Whittaker said: “I’m really thrilled and hopefully even more people will go off to the Lake District now. There are so many beautiful views in the Lake District – every view is amazing and it is such an inspirational and magical place to be.”
Whittaker revealed that she has been visiting the Lake District with her family for almost 20 years: “In that time we have discovered some special places that hold dear memories for me, and, from our home in Manchester, it takes just an hour and a half to get away from everything.”
Sheona Southern, Marketing Director at Cumbria Tourism, said: “We are delighted that Wastwater has been officially recognised nationwide as being Britain’s Favourite View. Wastwater is just one of the many fantastic views that we have to offer. We live in a beautiful part of the world that is appreciated by around 16 million visitors every year and we are very proud to show it off to many more.”
VisitBritain is encouraging Brits to discover and visit these spectacular locations with a special edition Britain’s Favourite View map and dedicated microsite. The map helps to guide visitors round a total of 43 views, including the 16 showcased in the ITV1 series. An extra 18 views will also be available on the website, taking visitors right across the nation.
